According to transfer news on Dutch outlet Voetbal International (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are ‘firmly’ interested in Ibrahim Sangare and have scouted him for ‘several weeks’ ahead of the summer window.
The PSV Eindhoven midfielder is a big part of the Dutch team’s starting XI and has already made 48 club appearances across all competitions this season. A defensive midfielder by trade, Sangare also boasts 17 caps for the Ivory Coast national team.
Apparently, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, and Leicester City are also keen
to sign the 24-year-old midfielder. These clubs could offer him a better chance at gametime, given Liverpool’s current quality in midfield.Thiago Alcantara is undeniably exquisite, Jordan Henderson is our leader in the middle of the park, Naby Keita is an asset on and off the ball, and Fabinho Tavares is Jurgen Klopp’s reliable destroyer in front of the backline.
Sangare, if he does come to Anfield, could then perhaps fight with Fabinho for starts. The Brazilian midfielder has often found himself without a natural backup in that role, and Henderson has had to deputise there in his absence.
At 24, the Ivorian offers Liverpool a chance to future-proof their midfield. Thiago, Hendo, and James Milner aren’t getting any younger and the Reds did not sign a like-for-like replacement when Georginio Wijnaldum left for PSG last summer.
Defensive midfield is perhaps one area where the Reds would do very well to reinforce. Whether it is Sangare who comes or someone else, fans would not be opposed to having a quality defensive midfielder in the squad to compete with Fabinho.
The last time the Reds did direct business with the Dutch club for a senior first-team player was all the way back in 2006 when defender Jan Kromkamp left Anfield for PSG after just six months since joining from Villarreal.
