Steve McManaman tells Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah that is not ‘good enough’ for Liverpool

Speaking to horseracing.net as quoted by The Express, Steve McManaman claimed that Eddie Nketiah isn’t good enough for Liverpool amidst the Arsenal striker getting linked with a move to Anfield and Chelsea.

Recently, 90min claimed that Chelsea and Liverpool are linked with a move for the 22-year-old striker. Nketiah has recently seen regular gametime under Mikel Arteta and even managed to score a few important goals in the process.

But according to McManaman, who started his career at Liverpool and then moved to Real Madrid in 1999, Nketiah won’t be able to hack it in Jurgen Klopp’s first-team set-up which already contains some of the league’s best forwards.

“I don’t think he’s good enough for Liverpool, to be honest. I like Eddie Nketiah, but he’s not going to dismantle any of that Liverpool front five and the club has an academy full of centre forwards, so I can’t see this move happening.”

McManaman may not be completely wrong with what he is saying. The Reds already possess five fearsome attackers- Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, and Luis Diaz.

Nketiah for free?

Apart from the Colombian international who moved to Liverpool from FC Porto this January, the other four have played as a centre-forward for the Reds at one point or the other during their careers.

But then again, one could argue if Nketiah would even be brought in to become the club’s main man up front. Divock Origi, according to Jurgen Klopp himself, is all set to leave the Reds this summer.

The Belgian was the definition of a super-sub for the Reds and more often than not, turned up on the big occasions for us. Nketiah, if he does join us, can play that role in case the ex-Lille man leaves the club in the upcoming window.

The Englishman has only started seeing regular minutes since January- when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang left for FC Barcelona. And even then, Nketiah has managed to score in just two of the 20 league games he has featured in.

That isn’t really the definition of lethality but there is nothing concrete to suggest that he can’t become an important player in Klopp’s team. But then again, for that to happen, the Reds would have to formalise any interest they have in the player, who becomes a free agent this summer.
