Liverpool make contact with Dutch giants regarding 22-year-old South American ace

Transfer News: Liverpool make their opening move in the pursuit of Ajax Amsterdam star Antony

According to Brazilian news outlet UOL Esporte (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool have made contact with the agent of Antony and the Ajax Amsterdam board regarding a possible transfer in the summer window. 

The Brazilian footballer has provided some top-class performances for Ajax this season. By scoring 22 goals and providing 10 assists in 33 matches

across all competitions, the 22-year-old has attracted a lot of interest from top European clubs. 

Liverpool, Manchester United and Newcastle United were believed to be interested in a transfer move for Antony. Liverpool have made the first move in the transfer race and remain keen on getting a deal done.

The Reds contacted Antony’s agent and his current club as well to discuss the possibility of a summer transfer. The conclusion of the meetings is unknown at this point, but we believe Jurgen Klopp’s team have made their interest clear to the opposite party. 

How can Antony help Liverpool? 

Antony’s spellbinding performances have reflected the natural quality he poses. He is young, hard-working and committed which makes him a natural target for some top teams. The list of teams in the fray could only increase in the summer given the youngster’s rising reputation.

Liverpool only have Mohamed Salah and Harvey Elliott in the right-wing position. Considering the intensity of the football that Jurgen Klopp demands, it would be wise to add some further depth to the position. At the same time, the Egyptian star might not be able to continue his top-class performances for a long time and is not getting any younger.  

Antony seems to be a quality prospect and appears to be on the cusp of greatness. Liverpool will do well to steal a march on their rivals and land the player as soon as possible. There is little to suggest that he cannot take his game to the next level under Klopp.

Liverpool’s current approach might give them an added advantage in the race as the early interest could work in their favour. The Reds have moved well in recent windows and it would appear that they are keen to repeat it once again.
