Post-Match Interview: Jurgen Klopp reveals reaction to ‘fake’ Aston Villa equaliser as Liverpool lose PL title to Manchester City

There was a moment when Jurgen Klopp and his Liverpool team would have heard fans celebrate around Anfield. Our supporters celebrated as if Aston Villa had equalised against Manchester City in the PL game at the Etihad.

The Villans were 2-0 up on the day but City fought back and scored three goals within 6 minutes of the second half. A win for the Reds and any dropped points for the Cityzens meant we lifted just our second Premier League title under Klopp.

Liverpool conceded early to Wolves and only took the lead a few minutes before regulation time at Anfield. By then, City had completed their comeback and the Reds now had to wait for news in Manchester- if Villa manage to make it 3-3.

They didn’t but there was a moment where a rumour spread around the stadium that it was level between Steven Gerrard and Pep Guardiola’s side. And our German manager admitted after the game in an interview (h/t Liverpool Echo for quotes) that he was fooled by it for a second.

“There was one moment when it was 3-2 and then for a second, I don’t know who started it, I thought they (Villa) had equalised. It was a good moment but it was only a second and everyone went ‘nah, nothing happened”.

This was one of the greatest seasons of PL football in modern history. Liverpool were down and out in the title race in January but to bring it to the last day and being one Villa goal away from the PL crown is something the team can be proud of.

The Reds made us proud

Trophies don’t sit in the houses of the fans- but memories last with them for a lifetime. 92 points in the league is a tally more than Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United ever managed in a 38-game season. And Klopp is rightly proud of his team’s efforts.

“I am incredibly proud, of course I am. The boys played an incredible season. The whole journey of 21/22 so far is absolutely exceptional. The game today showed so much about these boys.”

Klopp and Liverpool will be back for the title once again next season. As much as City fans would wish we get off their backs, this LFC team is going to challenge them each and every season- at least until we have Klopp as our manager.

For now, a UEFA Champions League final in Paris on 28th May against Real Madrid awaits. A competition Man City have never won, the Reds stand a chance to end their season on a high.
