Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah has confirmed that he is staying at Anfield for the next season with his contract slowly running out on Merseyside.
The Egyptian superstar is on a deal that expires in the summer of 2023 but is yet to put pen to paper on a new deal. This has naturally made our fans anxious as they wait to hear about the long-term future of one of our most important players.
Nevertheless, Salah has confirmed that he is going to stay at LFC for at least the next season. Speaking in a press conference before the UEFA Champions League final against Real Madrid, he said (h/t Mirror
):“I am staying next season for sure, that is clear.”
This comes as a timely boost for the Reds as they plan for the next season after their date with Real Madrid in Paris gets done. But is it really a piece of news that should make the club happy?
Salah is arguably one of the best attackers in world football. Turning 30 next month, he isn’t getting any younger but his fitness and goal-scoring prowess have proven that he still has a lot left to give.
So, if he doesn’t sign a new deal- of which there have been no solid indications as of now- and promises to stay at Anfield next year, it means the club can lose him on a free next year. And that is an agonising prospect.
Losing one of the best attackers in world football for nothing is a situation that would frustrate any team. It remains to be seen if the Reds put an offer on the table that Salah can’t refuse.
A big individual performance in the final could finally push FSG and co to do that but to offer a bumper contract to a winger who is entering his 30s is also something to carefully consider.
