“Too much”- Midfield star answers if UCL final will be his last game for Liverpool

Contract News: James Milner gives the latest on his Liverpool future in interview with Jamie Redknapp

Speaking to Jamie Redknapp in an interview for the Daily Mail, James Milner revealed that he isn’t thinking too much about his Liverpool contract ahead of the UEFA Champions League final vs Real Madrid.

If that is the case, the Englishman must hurry and try to sort the whole thing out as soon as possible. His deal with the Reds expires this summer, after which he will become a free agent.

Already 36, some would suggest that perhaps it is time for Milner to go. But most Liverpool fans would agree that he is an important figure in the dressing room and still has the legs to play cameos every now and then.

Speaking to Redknapp, who himself played for LFC between 1991 and 2002 as a midfielder, Milner revealed that he will think more about his future at Anfield after the final in Paris tonight. Redknapp asked:

“Your contract expires in a few weeks. You played in Klopp’s first game — a 0-0 draw with Tottenham in 2015 — and I don’t think I’m revealing state secrets here by saying the manager wants you to stay. Might this be your last game for Liverpool?”

And to this, Milner’s reply was perhaps pretty diplomatic. If Jurgen Klopp wants the ex-Leeds United and Manchester City star to stay on, there is no real harm in handing him a short-term contract. The versatile 36-year-old midfielder replied:

“Who knows? Obviously, I haven’t got a contract. I haven’t wanted to think about it until this season is over. Too many important games. Too much of an intense period.

Milner’s answer hints at the possibility that he is yet to receive an offer from the Reds. If LFC are using the quadruple hunt as an answer as to why some contracts or transfer dealings are being postponed, it may not be the wisest strategy to follow.

Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Sadio Mane are three other Liverpool stars whose contracts are trickling down fast. The trio is set to become free agents if they don’t put pen to paper on a new deal before the summer of 2023.

Milner continues to be a leader on and off the pitch and still has quality in his legs when we need it. His opening penalty against Chelsea in the FA Cup and the EFL Cup finals shows the types of jobs he can do for the Reds on the biggest of occasions.

A short, one year contract on reduced wages is the kind of contract that may make the most sense to most of our fans. But then again, it remains to be seen if Liverpool feel the same way and want to keep him on board.
