Speaking about Darwin Nunez, as quoted by Fabrizo Romano on his Twitter account, Jurgen Klopp thanked those at Liverpool for signing the highly-rated striker.
The Reds sealed a €100m transfer deal for the Uruguayan international, but that figure does include €25m in add-ons. The German manager would undoubtedly be excited after signing Nunez.
But he maintains that there is no pressure on the Uruguayan star. The club can take things slow with him, as the former SL Benfica striker is contracted until 2028 at Anfield.
“Darwin, super news. I’m very grateful to everyone at the club for making it happen. We’ve shown decisiveness, ambition. We’ve wonderful attacking options. So there is no pressure on him at all. He signs for a very long time and we intend to nurture his talent”.
We have wonderful attacking options indeed. Nunez joins the likes of Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah, and Luis Diaz at the club, while Sadio Mane, at least right now, continues to be a Red.
Those who have followed the German manager’s career would agree that this is the first time the Reds have signed a proper out-and-out centre-forward who comes in with the aim of becoming the club’s first-choice number nine.
The current LFC boss had Robert Lewandowski and Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang at Borussia Dortmund, but at Liverpool, he has preferred playing Roberto Firmino as a false nine. Our wingers, under Klopp, have always been our primary threat in the final third.
This could mark a change in dynamic whereby we now have a number nine that will get in the box and aim to score as many goals as he can. The wingers can be a supporting cast, or, they can maintain their prolific numbers and further aid our goal-scoring.
Whatever it may be, Klopp has a striker he likes. It was important that we got an attacker after Manchester City strengthened their Premier League-winning team by signing Erling Haaland.
It now remains to be seen to what extent Nunez is used in his debut season here.
