According to the Spanish news outlet Sport (h/t The Mirror), Real Madrid star Marco Asensio prefers to join AC Milan in a potential move instead of Liverpool in the summer transfer window. This news would come as a blow for the English club and their chances of adding him to their ranks for the next season.
Asensio looks set to enter the last 12 months of his current contract at Santiago Bernabeu, which has forced his future into uncertainty. The winger has not been a regular for Real for quite some time now, and he is eager to earn regular minutes with the 2022 Qatar World Cup being on the horizon.
A potential transfer is on the cards, but that may not be to Anfield, as game time could be an issue due to the heavy competition. Hence, a move to San Siro is likely to take place at this moment since joining the Reds could see the Spaniard’s struggles continue moving forward.
Signing the 26-year-old would have helped us solve our lack of depth on the right-wing. We currently have no natural backup options for Mohamed Salah in our ranks, which does raise some worries for the upcoming campaign.
The likes of Diogo Jota, Harvey Elliot and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain deputised when Salah was given a rest, but none of them is naturally suited to be utilised in that area. Asensio would have been a solid option indeed, and one would think that Jurgen Klopp would have helped him get back to his best self.
Asensio often put in a decent shift when he was given an outing by Carlo Ancelotti, even if the forward has not attained the level he was expected to in the past. With Salah’s future being uncertain
due to his contract situation, we could have used someone like the La Liga star for the time being. However, it seems that Asensio has no plans to take another risk after what he has endured in the Spanish capital. A move to Stefano Pielo’s side is just as ambitious as they are on the rise to becoming a titan once again, having won the Scudetto last season.
Then again, we should not admit defeat just yet and try our best to convince the 26-year-old to join forces with us this summer. We would engage in several different competitions at once, which calls for the need to use the entire squad in the best way possible now that five substitutions are allowed from here on out.
As such, the Madrid attacker would get more minutes to prove his worth, but whether that will be enough to change his current stance or not would only be known in due time.
