Report: ‘Extravagant’ TV presenter claims South American teenager is ‘going to Liverpool’

TV presenter from South America claims Santos star Marcos Leonardo is going to Liverpool

In a bizarre claim made by an ‘extravagant’ South American TV presenter this weekend, as relayed by Sport Witness (h/t Liverpool.com), Santos striker Marcos Leonardo is ‘going to Liverpool’.

If true, the Reds could be signing the teenager labelled as ‘the next Romario’. The Brazilian legend needs to introduction.

If a striker turns out to be half as prolific as Romario, then they have had a world-class career. Leonardo is certainly on the right path, having scored 25

goals already for Santos’ senior team. At 19, he is only getting started.

It remains to be seen how much truth the presenter’s claims hold, but if Leonardo is indeed Liverpool-bound, it could be a very smart signing. The Reds have shown keenness when it comes to signing South American talent in recent years.

Although they have largely come via European clubs, it would be a wise idea to shop straight from Brazil this time. Real Madrid and Barcelona have shown how productive that strategy can be.

Snapping up talent before they can make their name in Europe and drive up their price tag is often a smart move. And in all honesty, the Reds can use a striker- one who will be content with playing as a backup for a couple of years.

Young Leonardo could be one such player given his age and lack of experience in Europe. With no Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi next summer, we need a forward that can come off the bench or in cup games and make an impact.

It remains to be seen if the Reds are actually interested in the highly-rated Santos teenager. He even captained Brazil’s U18 side that smashed USA U20 4-0 in a friendly last November, where he also scored a hat-trick.
