Don Hutchinson explains why Liverpool won’t want Chelsea target and PSG star Neymar

Don Hutchinson told ESPN (h/t Liverpool Echo) that PSG star Neymar doesn’t appeal to a team like Liverpool because he would not fit in their system.

The 30-year-old Paris Saint-Germain star could be on the move this summer, with Chelsea already linked with him. That is according to ESPN, who claim that the former Barcelona man could now be axed.

Hutchinson, who played for the Scottish national team and clubs like Liverpool, Everton, and Sunderland during his heyday, believes no club outside the top four can afford a player like Neymar.

But the Reds would not want to sign the ex-Santos superstar because he simply won’t fit in their system. It isn’t clear what he meant by it but there can be arguments to back him up on his stance, or go against it.

“In his pomp, there was only Messi technically better than him. He was that good. You look at the top four teams outside of England, no one can afford him. Then there are teams like Liverpool, who don’t really want him because he wouldn’t fit into their system.”

The kind of aura that surrounds Neymar would make him a big name to be managed in the dressing room. His status and talent command his managers to make him the centre-piece of their team- be it Santos, PSG or Brazil.

Can we imagine Klopp managing a player of Neymar’s status? The German manager has seemingly focussed on building a team of capable players that play for each other.

Is Don right?

Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane grew in stature during their stay on Merseyside and it created two very difficult scenarios for us. While Mane ended up going to Bayern Munich, the Reds were forced to agree on a bumper deal for Salah this month.

Neymar won’t be cheap. He is the most expensive footballer in the world and is a heavy name to have on the wage books. But there is no real need for the Reds to take on the pressure of signing a player such as that.

Not only is his frustrating fitness record detrimental to his team’s and his own consistency, but there are no real gaps that Neymar would fill even if he does come here. Luis Diaz has done exceptionally well on the left flank.

He still has his best years ahead of him and can be the next big thing. Mohamed Salah is untouchable down that right-hand side while Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, and Roberto Firmino would all vie to start down the middle.

It remains to be seen if Klopp would want to play a number 10 that can fit a player like Neymar but the German has shown an inclination towards playing a system where the team can do a lot of hard work off the ball.

Hutchinson, in that regard, is right. Neymar doesn’t really offer Liverpool anything major for which they should go out and break the bank. They have a good thing going and signing a megastar like Neymar- who is now 30- isn’t something they need in attack right now.
