Gavi is close to committing his future to Barcelona amidst Liverpool interest

Barcelona youngster Gavi is expected to sign a new deal at the Camp Nou amidst links to Liverpool, with his current contract expiring in 2023. According to Barcelona’s official site, the club’s director of football, Mateu Alemany has come out and said that the 17-year-old will continue with the Blaugrana.

Alemany admits to having an agreement outlined and is waiting for the player to turn 18 so that he can sign a long-term contract.

“There is an outline of an agreement. We are highly committed to sorting out this situation. He is 17 years of age and we are waiting until he turns 18 on 5 August so he can sign a contract longer than three years.”

Alemany goes on to confess that the two parties still have minor details to discuss but calls the 17-year-old’s continuity at the club a guarantee. This does not augur well for the Reds who are keen to land the youngster.

“We have small details to close out but we will get it resolved. 100% Gavi will continue at Barca.”

Liverpool have been one of the names attached with Gavi in recent months as the 17-year-old continued to negotiate a contract with his boyhood club. If there is a chance of a deal between the Catalans and the Spanish national collapsing, top teams will be in the race for his signature.

Gavi a revelation

Gavi broke onto the scene last season under the management of Ronald Koeman. The 17-year-old made his debut against Getafe in the third match of the Spanish league campaign. Since then, the midfielder hasn’t looked back, and his aggressiveness and agility in the midfield are commendable.

Gavi isn’t afraid to run himself into the ground. The Spaniard presses the ball relentlessly. Reds fans will feel the 17-year-old’s intensity is a perfect fit for the current Liverpool side under Jurgen Klopp.

In his short career up until now, Gavi has featured 46 times for the Spanish giants, of which 34 came in the La Liga. With Xavi in the dugout now, the youngster’s influence on the team has only grown.

Gavi also has 10 international caps to his name and became the youngest player to feature for La Roja in a Nations League game against Italy, coming out of the game with plaudits. The 17-year-old also became his nation’s youngest ever goalscorer after netting against the Czech Republic.
