Liverpool have been linked with Bayern Munich winger Serge Gnabry in recent times. But according to Steve McManaman, it’s a move not worth making for the Reds right now.
Speaking to Horseracing.net (h/t Liverpool Echo), the former Reds and Real Madrid wideman suggested that while Gnabry could be fitted into this LFC team, it is better to avoid this “madness”.
“Gnabry will drop the shoulder like a typical old-school orthodox winger. So I think they could accommodate him from a playing point of view but again having six forwards would be madness.”
He is correct in the sense that such a situation can, of course, cause problems. Had Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi gotten more minutes here, perhaps they wouldn’t have jumped ship this summer.
“Sometimes it just causes more problems than you need, and Liverpool’s squad is big enough when everybody is fit and well, and if it stays like that, you probably don’t need any more players.”
Footballers don’t have forever to be playing at the top level as a player. Every season spent warming the bench is a year wasted where they could have progressed in a career that hardly lasts 15 to 20 years, sometimes less.
Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino, Luis Diaz, Mohamed Salah, and Darwin Nunez are enough for now. Rather than signing a player of Gnabry’s stature, it’s wiser to find a replacement for Taki or Origi.
The former was a cup game specialist while the latter was a super-sub. The former Arsenal winger, Gnabry, would strengthen most teams’ attacks with his skill and versatility.
Like Jota, he can play anywhere across the frontline. But at 26 and one of the star players for the Bavarians, he would certainly not settle for a lesser role than that of an important first-team player.
