Liverpool youngster completes Swindon Town switch

Liverpool youngster Tom Clayton completes Swindon Town transfer

Liverpool’s official website has confirmed Tom Clayton joined Swindon Town for an undisclosed price, making him the fourth player Liverpool has sold this summer.

Sadio Mane, Takumi Minamino, and Neco Williams have already departed the Reds, and further player cuts might be seen over the course of the summer.

With Liverpool announcing Clayton’s permanent transfer to League Two club Swindon Town for an undisclosed amount, he has now become the newest player to move on.

The Scotland Under-21s international joined the Reds at the Under-9s level and progressed through the youth system under Steven Gerrard, breaking into the Under-18s setup before moving up to the Under-23s squad.

The 21-year-old captained Barry Lewtas’ team last season as they concluded the year by winning the Lancashire FA Senior Cup. He mostly played a defensive role contributing as a defensive midfielder and centre-back from time to time.

The Scotland youth international has since moved in search of consistent senior action, however, there is currently no obvious path for him to the Liverpool first team.

Last season Swindon finished sixth in League Two but lost to Port Vale in the playoff semifinals and they will now be aiming to gain promotion under Scott Lindsey this season.

The Reds already have a solid backline, with Virgil van Dijk serving as the focal point of the defence. Ever since he joined us in 2018 after leaving Southampton, the Dutch national has changed our fortunes.

The Holland captain had one of the Premier League’s top defensive partnerships with Joel Matip last year. In the previous league season, we had a perfect home record. The group only let up nine goals while not losing a single game.

Ibrahima Konate joined the team from RB Leipzig and has improved with each subsequent game. In addition to the Frenchman, the Reds have a great backup option in Joe Gomez.

Hence it seems highly unlikely for a youngster like Clayton to break into the first team. In contrast, he would get many more chances at Swindon Town, eventually boosting his confidence and one day, he might get a chance to don the famous Liverpool first-team jersey.
