“Let him settle in”: Andy Robertson gives his verdict on new signing

Liverpool star Andy Robertson calls for patience regarding Darwin Nunez

Andy Robertson has given his take on Liverpool new boy Darwin Nunez and has called the Uruguayan a fantastic player who needs time to settle in.

Speaking to the media ahead of the pre-season game against Crystal Palace (h/t Liverpool Echo), the Scotland international gave his verdict on Nunez. The former Benfica man played his first minutes for the Reds in the pre-season opener in Thailand against Manchester United.

Speaking of the need to be patient, Robertson has seen the 23-year-old train with the side. Nunez is settling in slowly and the players that speak his language in the squad are helping the striker out.

Darwin Nunez played his first minutes for Liverpool in a pre-season friendly against United.

“He’s tall! But, look, he has obviously come in, we haven’t been back for too long, but we have to let him settle in. He’s looked good in training, and the Brazilian boys and everyone that speaks his language have helped him a lot.”

Nunez joined Liverpool this summer from Benfica for a considerable sum. The 23-year-old had a breakout season with the Eagles. In 41 appearances for the Lisbon-based side, the Uruguayan scored 34 goals in all competitions.

Nunez signed for Benfica in 2020 from UD Almeria. The Eagles took a chance on him after the 23-year-old impressed in the second-tier of Spanish football.

No pressure on Nunez

Robertson also spoke about the time the Uruguayan came up against Liverpool’s defence in the Champions League quarter-final last season. Nunez scored a goal in both legs as Liverpool went on to qualify for the next round.

“A fantastic player, we played against him and he made it really difficult for us defenders in the two games and if he puts in those performances then he’ll be a really good player for us.”

Indeed, fans will feel the 23-year-old will shine with the Reds if he performs the way he did against top opposition in European football last season. The striker has the potential to be one of the best in world football.

But coming into the Premier League is no easy task. While Nunez has played for one of the best teams in Portugal, England’s first tier is a different prospect. The expectation of winning and succeeding in every competition is high at Liverpool.

Fans wouldn’t worry too much though, as the Uruguayan has a lot of support in the forward positions. There won’t be as much pressure on the 23-year-old with Mohamed Salah on his side.
