According to Liverpool Echo, Serge Gnabry has been linked with a move to Liverpool, and the Athletic (Subscription Required) also claimed that the German star is happy to stay with Bayern Munich for ‘at least’ another season.
The German winger has had a great time with the Bavarian giants after a failed spell with Arsenal in England. He was pretty young during that time, to be fair, but it wasn’t until his move to Bayern that he really flourished on a consistent basis.
Now 27, he is one of the most potent attackers playing in Germany. With 17 goals and 10 assists across all competitions last season, Gnabry can score as well as create goals for his teammates.
And that is why his current contract saga has been drawing eyeballs. He had apparently refused to extend his contract with Bayern until now, with the German attacker unhappy with the right wing-back role he has been handed by Julian Nagelsmann.
But now, David Ornstein of the Athletic claims that the German star is set to extend his contract at Bayern, stating that it was always his priority to stay with the Bundesliga champions.
With the player not actively pushing for a move this summer, it’s best for LFC to forget about signing him right now. We have already lost Sadio Mane to Bayern this summer.
The Senegalese attacker would mean added competition for Gnabry in Bayern’s already stacked frontline. And this could have been a smart signing if the Reds were ever able to pull it off.
The former Gunner, after all, can play down the flanks as well as as a centre-forward. With 20 goals in 34 caps for the German national team, his pedigree for scoring goals isn’t up for debate.
If he had stayed at Bayern for another year and didn’t renew his deal, he too could have left in the same manner as Niklas Sule and David Alaba did in the past year- as a free agent. That would have been an ideal time for the Reds to throw their name in the hat for Gnabry.
But as of now, that looks a very distant possibility, with the German attacker to sign a long-term contract at his current club shortly.
