According to Keith Downie of Sky Sports, former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius is already in Newcastle in order to undergo a medical and joined Newcastle United on a short-term deal.
Karius was released by the Reds this summer after his contract at the club expired. He has been on loan at Besiktas and Union Berlin for the last two seasons, but failed to convince manager Jurgen Klopp to hand him a competitive start after Alisson Becker’s arrival from AS Roma in 2018.
Newcastle have sprung into action with regards to signing the German goalkeeper after an ankle injury to No. 2 goalkeeper Karl Darlow in training. Scans reveal that the 31-year-old Englishman will be sidelined for a while as a result of the injury.
Martin Dubravka has been loaned by the Toons to Manchester United for the season and he cannot be recalled before at least the January transfer window.
Nick Pope is expected to remain as manager Eddie Howe’s first-choice pick between the sticks but Karius could have the chance to make an impression when called upon and reignite his career.
He seemed destined for big things when we signed him from Mainz 05. The UEFA Champions League final against Real Madrid in the summer of 2018 seems to have shattered his playing career.
Following that game, where he made two clear errors in Madrid’s 3-1 win, Karius never looked the same. The Reds, in that time, found a new number 1 in Alisson, with Adrian San Miguel and Caiomhin Kelleher also on their books.
Hopefully, the 29-year-old Karius can have a decent spell with the Toons and get his career back on track. It is, of course, a sorry sight to see one game ruin such a promising career otherwise.
The move is not official yet and it seems that a medical is still pending. Since he is a free agent, Newcastle are able to make a move to sign him even after the transfer window deadline of September 1.
