Transfer News: Liverpool to battle Everton for Guido Rodriguez
Liverpool are set to battle it with Everton for Real Betis midfielder Guido Rodriguez. This is according to Sports Witness (h/t Liverpool Echo).
Both the Merseyside clubs are interested in the 28-year-old whose contract expires in the summer of 2024. The report also adds that it will take a fee of £26 million to prise the Argentina international from Spain.
The defensive midfielder has been at the La Liga club since joining them in January 2020 from Mexican side CF America. Rivals Chelsea and Manchester United have also been linked with the player in the past.
Rodriguez has established himself as a regular player for the club. The 28-year-old made 47 appearances last season in all competitions and also helped his side win the Copa del Rey, defeating Valencia 6-5 on penalties.
Liverpool need to freshen up their midfield. Jordan Henderson and James Milner cannot be regular starters for the club anymore. Other midfielders like Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are very injury-prone, making them less reliable.
Currently, only Fabinho is the defensive midfielder in the team. Should he get injured, there is no natural replacement for him in the starting eleven.
While other departments have alternate replacements, the defensive midfield one does not. Getting in an experienced player like Rodriguez would be a sensible move. He will not only help in adding depth to the squad but also help in increasing competition.

But our neighbours could disrupt such plans. It will be wise for the Reds to make a move as soon as possible. The midfielder could travel for the World Cup next month with La Albiceleste, his stocks could potentially skyrocket depending on his performance in Qatar.
