Tuesday’s training session saw one of Liverpool’s midfielders return after a long hiatus due to injury. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has made his way back after a hamstring injury back in July. He was injured in the pre-season friendly against Crystal Palace and had to sit out since. (h/t Liverpool Echo)
His last appearance for Liverpool came in March earlier this year, in a 1-0 win against Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup. He only played out the entire 90 minutes five times in 29 appearances across all competitions last season.
He is not in contention to feature against the Rangers at Ibrox on Wednesday as alongside Naby Keita, Ox stood left out of the Reds’ UEFA Champions League group-stage squad as the return dates from their injuries were unknown at that point in time.
However, returning from injury does not necessarily mean that the 29-year-old is match-fit. He would require to train for a few days and then potentially, make the squad for the games later on.
Given that he has not had first-team action since July, it would be extremely important for him to recover the correct way or else the recurrence of the injury is a real possibility. Hence, the transition should be as smooth as possible.
One more player whose prime years have been beset with injury issues, his first couple of seasons at Anfield were extremely promising. In 133
appearances for the Reds across all competitions, he has scored 17 goals and has 15 assists to his name as well.Nevertheless, he could still prove to be a good option from the bench and make a case for a new contract at the club, as his current deal expires next summer.
The next game Oxlade-Chamberlain could possibly be a part of the Liverpool league game against Manchester City. However, a game of such high intensity could prove to be too early for him, given that he has just returned from injury and would need time to recover and get match-fit.
His strikes against the Cityzens in the 2017-18 season cannot be forgotten. If he does feature in any capacity, hopefully, he belts one past Ederson Moraes like in the old days.
