Transfer News: Liverpool planning a January swoop for Konrad Laimer

Liverpool are planning a January swoop for RB Leipzig midfielder Konrad Laimer according to a report on Sky Germany (h/t Daily Mail).

Jurgen Klopp’s side have struggled this season, with the midfield department being particularly dysfunctional. The midfielders have either been out of form or have been very prone to injuries.

It is believed that the Reds are planning ‘significant investment’ next summer but are not prepared to wait for a midfielder till then. Laimer is also of interest to Bayern Munich and Manchester United.

The Reds could do with a young and experienced midfielder in their ranks. Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara and James Milner are all in their 30s and additional options are needed to challenge for a place in the team.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita are good options to have, but both are very injury prone and cannot be relied upon. Laimer could also be obtained on the cheap given that his contract will be up in the summer of 2023.

Laimer has made 167 appearances for the German side since 2017 scoring 11 goals and registering 18 assists in the process. An experienced midfielder, he is also a Reds fan, which could give advantage to Liverpool over other suitors.

But there could be one concern for the Merseyside club in their pursuit. The 25-year-old has been out of action since September after suffering an ankle ligament injury. It is hopeful that the midfielder will be back in action by January.

It remains to be seen if the Reds do make any move for the midfielder. There is no doubt that reinforcements are needed especially in the midfield department. Whether Laimer is one of them remains to be seen.
