Report: Asian billionaire enters the race as Liverpool continue search for new owners

Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani enters the race to buy Liverpool football club

According to a report in the Mirror (h/t Liverpool Echo), Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani has entered the fray to buy Liverpool football club from the Fenway Sports Group (FSG).

Earlier this week, the FSG put up a statement that they were looking for third-party investors and were also not against the sale of the club. This has gained interest from quite some people across the world.

Now, the latest to join the race is Indian billionaire Ambani, who is also the world’s eighth richest person. But he is not alone as the Merseyside club has interest from other

parties in the Middle East and the United States of America.

FSG bought the Merseyside club back in 2010 for just £300 million. It is now understood that the owners would be willing to sell for a whopping £4 billion.

Ambani has a net worth of around £90 billion, so finance is not likely to be an issue for the Indian industrialist. He is also a big sports fan and owns the Mumbai Indians team in the Indian Premier League.

While cricket is considered a religion in India, there is now a growing interest in football too. The Premier League is a hit in the country, with Liverpool having one of the biggest fanbases in the south Asian country.

The 65-year-old also helped set up the first major football league in India, the Indian Super League. Should he buy the club, Jurgen Klopp is likely to get a war chest to spend, something similar to that of Manchester City and Chelsea.

It is clear that the FSG have a host of buyers interested in the club. Who ends up buying the club is something that remains to be seen. Fans will hope that whoever buys, pumps money into the club to enhance the club’s reputation as a European elite.
