“10 more years”- Real Madrid star gives verdict on his future amid Liverpool links

Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio opens up about his future amidst Liverpool links

Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio is among the several midfielders linked with a move to Liverpool. His contract at Los Blancos runs out next summer (Transfermarkt) and Carlo Ancelotti is bearing the risk of losing him for free in 2023.

The 26-year-old plays a very versatile role at the club level and can put in a shift in right-wing, central midfield and attacking midfield too. The Spaniard is currently on World Cup duty in Qatar. Asensio could turn out to be a solid investment for Liverpool.

In 250 appearances for Real Madrid, Asensio has 52 goals and 27 assists across all competitions and has multiple trophies to his name. Since he is out of contract this summer, it makes him a transfer target for many clubs, including the Reds who are in dire straits in terms of their midfield.

Marco Asensio is a Liverpool transfer target.

However, in what could be a hindrance for the Reds in their pursuit of Asensio, the midfielder is hoping for a new contract at the Santiago Bernabeu this summer and here is what he said on Radio Marca via Liverpool Echo:

“Hopefully the renewal can be done and I will be very happy at Real Madrid .Hopefully it’s to stay for 10 more years here at Real. It’s not just me deciding — it’s also up to the club.”

Asensio has been with Real for six years and hopes to carry on at the Spanish capital for as long as possible. However, he has fallen down the pecking order and has not been an automatic starter for the last year or so.

Approaching the prime of his career, he would obviously want to garner as much playing time as possible which seems tough for the former Mallorca man under Ancelotti. At Liverpool, where there is a visible need for a midfielder, Asensio could possibly establish himself as a starter.

Marco on Merseyside?

With James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita all appearing to depart the club next summer after the end of their contracts, a move for a midfielder as capable as Asensio would make a lot of sense.

Apart from that, Jordan Henderson and Thiago are also on the wrong side of their thirties, and signing young midfielders will help secure the long-term future of the club.

Apart from the Spaniard, there are a lot of world-class midfielders available in the market for a free transfer. The likes of Mason Mount and Konrad Laimer also run out of contract next summer and could be a viable option for the Reds.
