Transfer News: Chelsea to re-open contract talks with 23-year-old Liverpool target

Mason Mount contract talks to re-open with Chelsea amid Liverpool links

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount is one of the latest midfielders in conversations about a move to Liverpool. The 23-year-old Englishman runs out of contract next summer (Transfermarkt) and naturally, saw himself linked with the Reds.

According to the Guardian, the Merseysiders stood aware of stalls in his contract negotiations with Chelsea and hence, showed interest in signing one of the brightest young talents of the League. A product of Chelsea’s youth academy, he has been with the Fulham-based side since the age of six.

However, TEAMtalk (h/t Liverpool Echo) claims that even with these slight delays in negotiations, the West London outfit are ready to restart talks with one of their most important players. This could be something that could make Liverpool a bit vigilant toward this situation.

Liverpool must secure UEFA Champions League football in order to sign Jude Bellingham and Mason Mount.

In 181 appearances across all competitions for Chelsea, Mount has a total of 11 goals and 18 assists. The player is currently on World Cup duty, and started both of England’s opening games, against Iran and the United States of America. He wasn’t impressive in the second outing but neither were his teammates.

The Reds need a midfield change

Liverpool’s state in midfield calls for an overhaul to a major extent. The younger players in Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones and Fabio Carvalho are not the finished product yet. Other starting options in midfield include Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara and James Milner, all three of them are well over the age of 31 and could not guarantee consistent performances throughout.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita will in the most likely situations not receive a contract extension and will depart the club once their contract expires next summer, hence, the Reds need starter quality European-level midfielders to cope with both these issues.

Mount seems like almost a perfect fit to eliminate the prevailing issues the Reds face at the moment in an ageing squad and inconsistent performances. A young player with his best years ahead of him, and a fairly consistent performer at club level, Mason could certainly be a good fit for Liverpool.

Liverpool transfer target Mason Mount.

Even if not Mount, a midfielder should certainly be on the top of the priority list for the Reds. There is an abundance of quality players, and Liverpool should choose one which they believe would suit them best.

It will be a surprise to see Mount leave a club he has been with all his life for a Premier League rival. And it would be equally surprising if the Blues prematurely offload him to a fellow English giant in Liverpool.

It’s best to forget about this one and focus on other transfer targets that may seem a bit more realistic.
