According to popular German Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool and Chelsea have been handed a boost in their pursuit of talented RB Leipzig midfielder Konrad Laimer.
Laimer is a name that has been doing the rounds in the Liverpool circle as a possible midfielder reinforcement but German giants Bayern Munich are considered favourites to snap up the talented Austrian.
However, Plettenberg claims that although Laimer is leaning towards a move to Bayern, the two parties do not have a 100% agreement and that the 25-year-old knows that the German club’s midfield options are relatively well stocked.
Laimer who is 25 years old has a contract with the Bundesliga club until 2023 (Transfermarkt
) and there seems to be absolutely no intention with either party to pen down a new deal and continue the association.Like most players who come through the RB ranks, Laimer has spent his fair share of time at both Salzburg and Leipzig and he now seems to be ready to take the next big step, and Liverpool will not be a bad option.
The Austrian central midfielder has shown his quality for Leipzig and he will be a very shrewd acquisition for the Reds. Laimer just feels like the kind of player who’d thrive in a Jurgen Klopp system and the best part about the deal is that he could arrive on a free transfer.
This is not the first time Liverpool will be signing a player from RB Leipzig. Naby Keita and Ibrahima Konate have both made a similar switch from the German club to the Reds and the latter in particular has been very impressive.
Laimer has also won 24 caps for the Austrian national team scoring two goals for his national team. He has appeared six times for Leipzig this season across all competitions, failing to score or assist a single goal.
The Liverpool midfield is in desperate need of reinforcements. Signing just Laimer will not be sufficient, but at 25, we will be getting a great player for a great deal. However, Bayern would surely be tough competitors for his signature given a move to the Bavarians means not relocating away from Germany.
Chelsea, meanwhile, have the ageing midfield pairing of Jorginho and N’Golo Kante, which could entice them to look for new signings. 25-year-old Laimer won’t be a bad option for them as well, which is why the Reds have to be quick to react and not miss out on him if he does move elsewhere in 2023.
