“Better fit at Man United or Arsenal”- Dutch international told to snub Liverpool interest in favour of PL rivals

Stan Collymore says Liverpool target Cody Gakpo is better suited to Manchester United and Arsenal

Liverpool see themselves linked with a move for PSV Eindhoven’s Dutch winger Cody Gakpo. The 23-year-old is currently on World Cup duty for the Netherlands and has scored in both of their opening games, against Senegal and Ecuador.

He has easily been the distinct performer for Louis van Gaal’s side this season and has been performing exceedingly well under Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk’s captaincy. In 159 appearances for Eindhoven, Gakpo has 55 goals and 50 assists across all competitions.

The left-winger has seen himself linked with Liverpool in recent weeks leading up to the World Cup. The fact that he has had an outstanding World Cup so far could mean that he could oversee a move to a big European club as early as next summer.

With a number of Liverpool’s rivals also linked with a move, former Reds striker Stan Collymore believes that Gakpo won’t exactly fit the Merseysiders and here is what he said exclusively via CaughtOffside (h/t the Express):

“I wouldn’t say Liverpool on the basis that Luis Diaz and Fabio Carvalho both come from the left which is where Cody Gakpo often pops up.”

“Plus, Liverpool also have Darwin Nunez, who operates down the centre. I really like him but I could see him being a better fit at Man United or Arsenal.”

Colly is more or less precise with his view of the situation. Following the signing of Darwin Nunez over the summer, the Reds’ attack seems pretty much set. Because Gakpo usually plays down the left wing, there is not enough room for him at Jurgen Klopp’s side at Liverpool.

Liverpool’s Potent attack doesn’t need more additions

With Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez more than capable of playing down that channel whenever first-choice LW Luis Diaz is unavailable, the addition of another player in such a role would not be the best investment of money.

Moreover, even the likes of Fabio Carvalho and Curtis Jones could chip in from that strait. Both these players have played that role this season, and if the team needs them to, no doubt they would be eager to go out and replay the role of a left-winger.

Taking nothing away from the certainty that Gakpo is a fantastic player, he is not necessarily the right fit for Liverpool in the sense that there isn’t any void that he would fill here. However, if he decides to make a move to the Reds’ rival clubs, that could well and truly become a problem to handle for the Merseysiders.

Arsenal could use him as competition for Gabriel Jesus while Manchester United have a hole to fill after Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure recently.

However, the World Cup gives Liverpool scouts a wonderful opportunity to keep an eye out for other players, especially midfielders who could potentially fit in their plans and become future stars at Anfield.
