PSV Eindhoven’s Dutch winger Cody Gakpo saw himself linked with a move to Liverpool in the build-up to the FIFA World Cup earlier this month. However, also linked with a move for the 23-year-old are the Reds’ North-West rivals Manchester United.
Gakpo has been one of the Netherlands’ best players in the World Cup. He has two
goals in as many games and has been instrumental in Louis van Gaal’s side. He would hope to bring his nation glory come the latter stages of the tournament. The player recently made the admission that he wishes to move on to a greater club to achieve his long-term goals and named Liverpool, Man United and Manchester City alongside Real Madrid and Barcelona as clubs wherein it would be an honour for him to play.
However, recent news emerges that Gakpo is waiting for a transfer to Manchester United. PSV technical director John de Jong told Dutch news outlet NOS on Sunday, via the Daily Mail that Gakpo has been waiting a long time for the transfer to Manchester United. (h/t Liverpool Echo)
“Cody has been waiting a long time for the transfer to Manchester United and it seemed to be coming. A week before the end of the transfer window that fell through. After that he had two options in the Premier League, but you never know how that will turn out.”
This could be an indication of the fact that his desire to move to Manchester and play under his fellow countryman Erik ten Hag is much stronger than his desire to move to Liverpool and play at Anfield.
Having said that, the Reds do not have a shortage of options in attack to be fair. Liverpool’s mainstay front three of Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz will have enough depth with Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez.
Moreover, youngsters including Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho will soon make the transition to further advanced roles than what they are playing now. If there is one department wherein the Reds would do themselves a world of good by signing a player, it would be the midfield.
However, nothing is certain in football and if the management at Liverpool believes that Gakpo would suit them well, they could make a move for the player. However, it is natural that club football will presently be the least of concerns for Gakpo, who would rather be focusing on making his nation proud at the World Cup.
