“He’s going to be a goal machine”- Liverpool defender backs Darwin Nunez to succeed with the Reds

Kostas Tsimikas expresses support for Liverpool team-mate Darwin Nunez

The initial few weeks for Darwin Nunez in Liverpool colours were not the best. However, slowly but surely he is showing all the signs of adjusting to his new club, and very recently, hit the back of the net twice in the Reds’ 4-1 win against AC Milan in a mid-season friendly.

In 18 appearances across all competitions, Darwin has nine goals and two assists to his name for the Reds. The 23-year-old Uruguayan scored a brace against Southampton in Liverpool’s last fixture before the international break.

He has the backing of all of his teammates and fans at Liverpool, and hopefully, he shows the critics that he is well and truly worth the £85m

the Reds paid to secure his services from Benfica.

The Liverpool left-back talked to The Athletic and assured the viewers that Darwin will for sure be a ‘goal machine’ for the Reds in the coming days. Here is what he added:

“Darwin is such a talented guy. That was clear to all of us when we played Benfica last season. We were very happy when he joined us. All players need some time to adapt to a new system and game plan. Even more so for Darwin as he doesn’t speak English, but I’m not worried about him at all. He’s going to be a goal machine for us. He’s getting better and better.”

In Liverpool’s two games against Benfica, last season in the UEFA Champions League, Darwin scored a goal in each game but was unable to take his then-team to the next round of the Champions League.

Nunez for the Reds

However, he established himself as a top young striker, and one for the future, and the Reds wasted no time in getting him on board at Anfield. Coming to the Premier League in the same window as Erling Haaland, the pressure was certain, and while it seems that it may have got to him in the earlier weeks of the campaign, he looks much more settled in Liverpool Red now.

He will be eager to get over the uneasy campaign for Uruguay in the World Cup earlier this month. They stood eliminated in the Group Stage. The Reds restart their competitive campaign against a very strong Manchester City side and will go up against them in the Carabao Cup.

Liverpool have not lost to their arch-rivals in two games against them this season and will hope to continue to do the same. Hopefully, we will give Pep Guardiola more reasons to be annoyed.

Darwin will expect to start against the Mancs as the Reds will be without the services of both, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota, who are out due to injury. Alongside him in the frontline, natural choices would be Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino but if the manager intends to chop and change to try something new, we could see a different formation as well.
