Manchester United enter the race for Liverpool target who won the 2022 World Cup

Manchester United enter the race for Liverpool transfer target Enzo Fernandez

SL Benfica’s Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who sees himself on Liverpool’s transfer radar for quite a while, is now attracting the attention of recruiters from Manchester United as well.

UOL Sport via Liverpool Echo report that the Red Devils are in a much better spot than the Reds to get Enzo on board because of the Merseysiders’ unwillingness to spend as much as €120m to trigger the 21-year-old’s release clause.

It is not extremely tough to understand the position of Liverpool’s owners. Under FSG, the Reds have not spent the big bucks quite often and we, as a club are famous for being extremely strict when it comes to spending money, and even though that is great from a financial perspective, during this stage when the Reds are in a transition, it is important to consider that factor and get in some top quality players like Fernandez on board.

Fernandez’s stock has obviously seen a surge after his antics for La Albiceleste in the recently concluded 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The central midfielder’s aggressive work rate in the middle of the park stood extremely crucial for his country’s successful run in the middle east, winning the trophy.

Liverpool have a decision to make

The Reds also have Jude Bellingham on their transfer radar who will alone cost the club more or less the same figure it would cost to get Enzo on board. The Athletic‘s valuation of the Englishman three months ago stood at £131m, and after his performances in the World Cup as well, Borussia Dortmund would want more than just that.

However, with United’s interest in Fernandez, the Reds should now be swift in making a decision. Although having both players at Anfield will be the most ideal of all situations, given the Reds’ spending habits in the past, it is crucial for the recruitment team to make priorities heading into the transfer market.

Whether it is Enzo or Jude, or anyone else on the radar for Liverpool at this time does not really matter. The fact is, the Reds need reinforcements, and urgently.

It will be one thing missing out on them, and a whole other level of frustration if it’s a direct Premier League rival getting their hands on them.

The players mentioned have displayed their quality on the biggest of stages and hence, there would hardly be better targets for us to pursue now. If there has ever been a time to spend at Liverpool – without having to sell – it is now.
