Paul Merson tells Liverpool where they need to strengthen

Former Arsenal star Paul Merson talks about Liverpool needing a central midfielder

After looking at the abysmal performance from the midfield apart from Thiago in Liverpool’s lucky 2-1 win against Leicester City, manager Jurgen Klopp would know that signing a midfielder should be among the highest of priorities for the Reds.

The Reds continue to see themselves linked with a move for Jude Bellingham and Enzo Fernandez among others, but only time will tell whether we can actually pull off two £100m+ signings in two successive windows, or potentially together in the summer window next season.

One would believe that before signing Cody Gakpo

, a move for a midfielder would have made more sense. But in reality, the Reds needed both a left-winger and central midfielders. Even former Arsenal star Paul Merson says the same in his column for the Daily Star.

Here is what he wrote:

“But Liverpool need a central midfield player badly in my opinion. They don’t have enough quality in there and they don’t have enough legs either. They don’t dominate in the midfield areas the way they used to. When they do that, the full backs have the freedom to roam. Now they can’t.”

New Players are a necessity at Liverpool

Merse is precisely correct. Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold do not have the same freedom to run down the wing with the midfielders not playing at their best and needing to rush back to defensive duties leaving the Reds vulnerable to counterattacks on the wings.

The legs of James Milner and Jordan Henderson cannot go on and on forever, and Liverpool will need to sign young midfielders to secure the long-term future of the club. Moreover, Fabinho also has been on and off in the recent past, and having a backup for him will certainly not hurt the Reds by any means.

Liverpool must break the bank for Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham.

The window still has a long way to go, and the Reds could add a new player, hopefully, a midfielder, before the end of the window in all likelihood. However, the Reds need to stick to their successful formula of waiting for the right player instead of going behind any player who is in form.

Hopefully, this yellow-wearing world-class midfielder joins the Reds at the earliest to fend off most issues Liverpool are presently facing.
