According to CBS Sports’ Ben Jacobs (viaGiveMeSport) [h/t Liverpool Echo], the Reds are among the sides keeping track of Borussia Dortmund’s teenage striker Youssoufa Moukoko. The 19-year-old German international runs out of contract this summer (Transfermarkt) and he could prove to be a good addition to the squad in the long term.
The Reds themselves have a player running down his contract in the summer as Roberto Firmino sees his contract out in six months’ time. So far, there has been no official news of a contract extension for the Brazilian.
However, the manager spoke about how he would like to see Firmino extend his stay at Anfield, and the arrival of Cody Gakpo changes nothing
in their approach to Bobby’s contract stance.Nevertheless, speaking of Moukoko, the striker has six goals and as many assists in 22 appearances across all competitions for Dortmund this season. He was also part of the German squad for the World Cup earlier last month.
The player is eligible to hold pre-contract talks and agreements as there are less than six months to go before his current deal expires, and it appears that Dortmund and Moukoko have not come to an agreement on a new contract.
Moreover, the report suggests that Manchester United and Barcelona are also in the race to get the player’s signature. Speaking of whether Liverpool needs his services or not, it is a little bit of a dicey situation.
To sum it up, the Reds might need him if they do not extend Firmino’s contract to maintain the depth in attack, or else, not as following the arrival of Gakpo, the frontline looks more than just sorted.
However, his demands of guaranteed playing time could not be promised at the Reds given how Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and now Gakpo are all way more experienced than the German international, and most of them are nearing their prime as well.
The Reds could rather shift their attention towards getting on board Moukoko’s team-mate at Dortmund as Jude Bellingham would fit what the Reds need better than any other player playing professional football in any of the top five leagues across the world.
A midfielder joining the Reds at this point in time will be the best situation for the Reds as we are gathering momentum and trying our best to finish in a UCL spot by the end of the season.
