According to Mundo Deportivo (h/t Liverpool Echo), Spanish giants Atletico Madrid are interested in signing Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino, whose contract expires at Anfield in the coming summer (Transfermarkt).
The Brazil international, who was not part of the national team’s World Cup squad, has been in great form for the Reds this season. His future has come under a shadow though, following the arrival of Cody Gakpo a few days ago.
A resurgence in form has urged
the Anfield hierarchy to extend Firmino’s deal, even on a short-term basis. Manager Jurgen Klopp has openly talked about discussing the player’s contract extension in the last few days and weeks. The 31-year-old has scored nine goals and assisted four in 21 appearances in all competitions this season so far. Despite having a plethora of options up front, the senior forward has come up trumps throughout this campaign, even in a team that has struggled for form and consistency.
Atletico might be interested in Firmino because they are willing to sell Joao Felix, who has been on the fringes of things under Diego Simeone. So, they might want to add a forward in the January window or in the summer.
From what we have seen of the Brazil international this season, he has shown some vintage form. Add that to the fact that he is an experienced player who knows the Klopp system inside out, it might be sensible to keep him beyond this season.
Moreover, he is 31 and still has a few years left in him to produce the goods at the highest level. So, it would be good if those years are spent at Anfield, rather than elsewhere. He is technically strong and can play in different positions centrally. So, there is an asset there that Klopp can use in different ways.
