“Helps us a lot”- Liverpool defensive ace gives his verdict on newboy Cody Gakpo

Ibrahima Konate talks about Liverpool new boy Cody Gakpo

Liverpool were quick to sign Cody Gakpo after the Dutchman saw himself extensively linked with a move to Manchester United for a long time. The 23-year-old had an extremely successful World Cup campaign on a personal front scoring three goals from five games.

Liverpool’s new #18 could make his debut on Saturday in the FA Cup fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield after the registration formalities were executed very recently.

Prior to his transfer to the Reds, in 24 appearances for PSV across all competitions in the same season scored 13 goals and 17 assists

and stood among the leading goal contributors in Europe’s top five leagues for the current campaign.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konate talked about the signing of Gakpo and training with the new recruit at the club. Here is what Ibou said:

“I only trained with him [on Thursday] and he’s comfortable, he’s happy to be here,”

“We are also happy to be with him in this season and we know he did a very great World Cup. I hope he will help us a lot.”

Konate and Gakpo, the future of Liverpool?

Ibou himself returned to the starting line-up for the first time after the World Cup in the unfortunate 3-1 loss to Brentford away from home and he was far from his usual self in the game.

He would hope to make the starting XI once again after the injury situation with Virgil van Dijk which will see the Dutchman out of action for at least a month. Moreover, playing Ibou gives the gaffer an extra option of playing Joe Gomez at right-back giving Trent Alexander-Arnold a small break.

However, speaking of Gakpo, the player is in full contention to face Julen Lopetegui’s side this weekend and we could see the trio of Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo in action for the first time. Hopefully, he carries on his form from the World Cup and puts the Reds in a better position than what they find themselves in.

Altogether, after successfully signing a forward this season, we could only hope for the recruitment team to have a look at the slim depth we have in the middle of the park. Addressing the deficit could prove to be a difference-maker this season.
