In what could be a significant boost for Liverpool in their transfer plans for the summer, Chelsea’s potential deal for the Reds’ transfer target Enzo Fernandez seems like it stands collapsed after several days of talks and negotiations.
Argentinian journalist Cesar Luis Merlo (h/t Liverpool Echo) spoke about how the deal failed to go through as Chelsea’s representatives wanted to pay in instalments for the player. After multiple days of negotiations led nowhere, Benfica ‘gave up’ on selling their player. It is sad for the Blues but there will be little sympathy for their cause from Anfield.
While Liverpool could make their move, it will be far from straightforward. One, the Reds must certainly have the resources to pay everything upfront to secure the services of the player. Two, Liverpool can only go ahead with player negotiations after triggering the €120m clause in Enzo’s contract.
Liverpool could now focus on trying to get Enzo on board as the player was on the Reds’ transfer radar much before Chelsea laid their eyes on the player and the Merseysiders are certainly no new to dealing with Benfica as they signed Darwin Nunez from the Portuguese giants just earlier last summer.
Enzo, along with Liverpool’s top transfer target Jude Bellingham, are players who could literally walk into the Reds’ midfield at this point.
Both are young, both proven at the highest level, and the most important thing is they are the perfect fit for the Reds given our transitioning phase in the middle of the park.
Fernandez is a versatile player who can play all roles in the midfield and play as well in either position. In 35 appearances for both club and country across all competitions this season, he has four goals and six assists to boot.
Having a player like Enzo on board could also provide an opportunity for the team’s veteran players to take on more of a mentorship role, helping to guide and develop the younger player as he grows and improves.
