Premier League legend Alan Shearer backs Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez to come good

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez is the centre of attention both, on and off the pitch. His frequent scuffing of big chances on the field makes the headlines, the memes and the topic of discussion off the field.

Even with what would seem like an extremely bad start to his campaign from the Youtube Compilations of all the misses, he’s been a treat to watch because of his movement in front of the goal and has 10 goals and three assists in 23 appearances for the Reds across all competitions.

The Uruguayan joined the club earlier this summer for a potential club-record fee of £85m and hence, the pressure on him to perform is soaring such heights. But someone who watches him knows that he is one of the few Liverpool players working their socks off in this dismaying campaign so far.

Writing of the player in his column for The Athletic, here is what Newcastle United and Premier League legend Alan Shearer wrote about Nunez and his scope for improvement in finishing:

“The point is, he has plenty of time to become the world-class striker that all his attributes suggest he could be and he has plenty of knowledgeable people at Liverpool to help him get there, including the fans who continue to back him.”

Darwin will surely get the goals

Nunez’s speed allows him to get behind defenders and create space for himself, making him a difficult player to contain. This can be especially dangerous when Liverpool is on the counter-attack, as Nunez’s speed allows him to quickly turn defence into offence.

His pace also allows him to make runs into the box, which can create scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates and it is surely just about time when it comes to him finishing off the chances.

Furthermore, Nunez’s physicality makes him a formidable presence on the field. He is strong on the ball and able to hold off defenders, which allows him to maintain possession and keep the ball in the attacking third.

He can also be a handful in the air, winning aerial duels and causing problems for defenders when the ball is played into the box and his goal against Wolves in the FA Cup was an example of that.

Nunez’s physicality also allows him to make runs into the channels and stretch the defensive line, creating space for his teammates. These attributes make Nunez a valuable asset for Liverpool, even if he misses some chances and that too shall pass sooner than later for the 23-year-old Uruguayan.

More Liverpool News:

As Shearer rightly pointed out, having the right people around him at Liverpool will certainly help him grow from the tough moments he’s had in front of the goal, and hopefully, the numbers start growing fast sooner than later.

His chemistry with Mohamed Salah seems to be working great, and hopefully, Cody Gakpo in the mix will also help the team in the long run.
