Liverpool could yet still make a move for RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol

According to journalist Christian Falk, while writing for Caught Offside (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool could still yet make a move for RB Leipzig and Croatia defender Josko Gvardiol.

Gvardiol was the subject of interest from Chelsea but with the London club completing a deal for Benoit Badiashile, it is tough to see them making a move for the Croatian defender, who impressed everyone with his performances at the FIFA World Cup.

Chelsea’s loss could pave the way for Liverpool to make a move for the player but only if certain factors are met as mentioned by Falk.

“It would be good for Liverpool if Josko Gvardiol stays another season as they can’t do two transfers like Bellingham and Gvardiol – they’d have to pay about €100m [£89m].”

“It could work out for Liverpool and it’s worth remembering that Jurgen Klopp is very aware of what’s happening in the Bundesliga, so I think he’d be keen.”

“I believe Gvardiol would like to make the next step and will certainly consider his options if there’s an offer on the table. If a Premier League club wants to pay this kind of money in the summer, Leipzig’s position on the matter will change.”

Gvardiol is one of the most exciting prospects to come out of the Bundesliga in recent times and definitely a move to the Premier League could be on the cards for the player.

A young left-footed centre-back who is very comfortable playing out from the back, he would be a shrewd signing for anyone that is able to secure his services.

Liverpool are in dire need of a centre-back and the concern comes forward when one of our established defenders are sidelined due to injury, just as happened with Virgil van Dijk.

Van Dijk is the leader of the pack while Ibrahima Konate is a perfect successor for the role. However, except for these two Liverpool are short in numbers at the back when Joel Matip and Joe Gomez are not fit – the duo are, after all, infamous for their injury troubles on Merseyside.

Although Gvardiol would be an expensive buy, we have seen in the past that good money on a good investment will reap rewards. Fans would want the priority for the 2023 summer transfer window would be to sign a high-quality midfielder in addition to strengthening the squad in other areas.

With the player publicly admitting his dream to play for Liverpool, this could be one of the sagas to watch out for in the summer. But it’s also a transfer we shouldn’t throw everything on right now unless a senior centre-back leaves us – excluding the likes of Nat Phillips of Sepp van den Berg.
