“I have seen Amrabat at the World Cup”- Liverpool warned not to panic-buy Morocco midfielder

Liverpool warned by Don Hutchinson of ‘panic-buying’ in their pursuit of Sofyan Amrabat

Sofyan Amrabat stands linked with a move to Liverpool. The defensive midfielder, currently at Fiorentina, had an amazingly successful World Cup campaign for Morocco recently following which, the player saw himself among the list of targets for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

The 26-year-old was virtually an unknown commodity before the tournament in Qatar, but post that, he sees himself on the transfer radar of big European clubs including the likes of Liverpool and Atletico Madrid. Moreover, even Tottenham Hotspur stand interested in securing the services of Amrabat.

However, former Liverpool player Don Hutchinson has warned the Reds of ‘panic-buying’ in their search for a Georginio Wijnaldum replacement. The Dutchman moved to PSG back in 2021, and Liverpool have not found a like-to-like replacement for the player yet.

Here is what Don told ESPN (h/t The Express) on Liverpool’s pursuit of Amrabat:

“They have to make sure they don’t panic [in the transfer market]. I have seen Amrabat at the World Cup. He had a brilliant World Cup for Morocco.”

“He hasn’t been that good for Fiorentina for 18 months, so you can’t just panic and look at these players and think ‘that’s the one I need’. Make sure you get the right one.”

Is Amrabat the Right fit for the Reds?

One would believe that Hutchinson could be right. Amrabat could turn out to be a one-tourney wonder but this World Cup could also be the start of a wonderful growth arc for the player. But in any case, Liverpool cannot certainly take a chance with the player in this phase of transition we are in.

At this moment, we need players who have consistently shown levels at the highest level of the game and Amrabat, unfortunately, doesn’t tick this box. Other players, including the likes of Jude Bellingham, certainly do fit the criteria and it is important for Liverpool to make sure that they fit into the plans for the club.

Liverpool-linked midfielder Jude Bellingham could be a better fit for the Reds than Sofyan Amrabat.

It is important for Liverpool to carefully identify and acquire a player who not only possesses the skill set and abilities to contribute to the team’s performance but also aligns with the club’s overall strategy and tactics.
