The Telegraph report that Chelsea has entered the race for Liverpool transfer target Matheus Nunes of Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Portuguese player is 24 years old and is a highly talented midfielder. Both Liverpool and Chelsea see themselves in a transition phase and are looking to strengthen their squad.
Nunes could provide a much-needed after a season where the midfield has lacked creativity and energy. He is a player who can break down defences with his passing and dribbling abilities, as well as his vision. He could be the midfield general that Liverpool has sorely lacked.
The player, prior to his move to Wolverhampton was on the Reds’ radar and the recruitment team him in and out. Hence, if they believe and Julian Ward believes that the former Sporting midfielder could stand as the right fit for Liverpool, he might as well be.
One of the main reasons Liverpool needs Nunes is because of their ageing midfield. The Reds have been without some key players for much of the season. Moreover, Fabinho and Jordan Henderson are visibly dropping off and Liverpool could do with a makeover to that aspect of their game.
Another reason why Liverpool needs Nunes is because of his versatility. He can play in a number of different positions in the midfield, which would give manager Jurgen Klopp several options. He could play as a central midfielder, a playmaker or even as a deep-lying playmaker.
This would give Liverpool much flexibility in their midfield, which is something that has been lacking this season. Chelsea are also in the same boat as us given their midfielders are also either not performing or are very old to continue performing at the top level.
Nunes could be the missing piece in Liverpool’s puzzle. He is a highly talented midfielder who could provide a lot of creativity and energy to Liverpool’s midfield. He is versatile and could be a great addition to the team. At 24, there is a whole lot of football in him and could be a great asset for the Reds in the long term as well.
