When it comes to Nathaniel Phillips, Liverpool often see themselves in a spot of bother. The 25-year-old is a cult hero at the club but still, game time is tough to come by for our Bolton Maresi’.
In Liverpool’s tough injury-laid season in 2020/21, Phillips was a rock at the back and was extremely crucial in helping the Reds secure a spot in the UEFA Champions League for the next season along with Rhys Williams.
However, post the return of Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez from their injuries and the signing of Ibrahima Konate, game-time has been a major concern for the player, and that is why he even saw himself out on loan last season and helped Bournemouth gain promotion to the Premier League.
There was speculation over his future at the club in the summer, but he stayed put probably because the Reds did not get the right offer for the player. However, manager Jurgen Klopp recently spoke about his future and here is what he said via Liverpool Echo:
“It depends on the offers. We have to be prepared for everything. We will see.”
This season also, the player only has five appearances for the Reds and from what it seems, it would be best for the player to move on for the sake of his career. Liverpool would absolutely not mind having him on board as he is a top-quality player, but soon reaching the prime of his playing days, he would want to be playing week in and week out.
The lack of game time for Phillips has been a disappointment for both the player and the club. Phillips is a hard-working and dedicated professional who has always given his all to the team. However, with the level of competition in the Liverpool defence, it has been difficult for him to make an impact.
In addition, the lack of game time has also been detrimental to Phillips’ development as a player. The 24-year-old has yet to establish himself as a regular starter at the highest level and needs regular playing time to continue to improve.
In conclusion, given the current situation, it may be best for both parties to move on, in order for Phillips to find a new team where he can get regular playing time and continue to improve his career.
