Steve Nicol feels “everybody needs to calm down” after Liverpool beat Everton

Liverpool icon Steve Nicol feels “everybody needs to calm down” after the Red beat Everton 2-0 in the Merseyside derby in the Premier League.

The Anfield side welcomed the Toffees on Monday (13 February). In the end, Jurgen Klopp’s team secured the three points after Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo found the back of the net.

Speaking after the victory on ESPN (h/t Liverpool Echo), Nicol, who spent 13 years at Liverpool, believes people should not get carried away with the Reds’ result against Everton. He is of the opinion that we still need to go a long way.

“It’s a good victory, an important victory but it is against a team that looks as if they are going to get relegated so everybody needs to calm down.

“We’re starting with a very low bar.”

The Goodison Park side have not been at their best over the years. Last season, Frank Lampard was barely able to lead our Merseyside rivals out of the relegation fight and secure their place in the English top flight.

Once again, in the current campaign, Everton are struggling to hold on to their PL status. Lampard has now left the hot seat at the Goodison Park side, with Sean Dyche now taking charge of the struggling Merseysiders.

However, Liverpool are nowhere near expectations this season, either. Klopp’s team have found life difficult in the league. We have also been knocked out of the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.

But against Everton, we finally found some rhythm. Salah, who has had a mixed campaign, looked back to his former self. On the other hand, Gakpo also broke his duck in a red shirt after his arrival in January from PSV Eindhoven.

While the Toffees did not pose a lot of threat, it was still an important win in a derby. A victory over our arch-rivals means a lot to our supporters. It will also hopefully provide Liverpool with some momentum.

For now, the Reds still have to make up a lot of ground to catch up with the other teams in the top four. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether Klopp is able to maintain consistency going forward.

Nicol is free to call the situation as he sees it but given our form of late, getting one over our local rivals for Merseyside supremacy was a relief to fans. While the Toffees are not the toughest opponents, the win can help the Reds build up momentum for the games to come. After all, winning them all also starts with one.
