Liverpool goalkeeping coach John Achterberg, while speaking to Liverpool Echo, has rallied support for former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius ahead of the Carabao Cup final against Manchester United.
Manchester United and Newcastle United meet in the finals of the Carabao Cup and while not in the competition, Liverpool still had a part to play in the proceedings.
In the 2-0 win over the Magpies, their first-choice goalkeeper Nick Pope was sent off for a reckless challenge whilst trying to clear the ball which resulted in the player being suspended for the final.
Newcastle no. 2 Martin Duvrabka is also unavailable for selection having featured for Manchester United in the competition already during his short loan stint at the club.
This brings us to Karius, who is currently third in the pecking order at Newcastle, having joined the club last summer in a bid to rejuvenate his career in England.
Achterberg has offered good wishes to the player ahead of an important fixture and believes he could turn his career around with a good performance at Wembley.
“Of course, you want him to play really well and to be the best he can. I hope he can keep a clean sheet and be the Man of the Match.
You want all the goalkeepers you worked with to do well and for Loris, it is the same. If he does well, this can be the next step for his career to kick on again.”
Karius had a dreadful time at Anfield and it all went downhill after his two costly errors led to a Liverpool defeat to Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final.
Almost five years from that moment, Karius has been provided with an unexpected opportunity to get back the support of the Liverpool faithful.
Helping his team win against Liverpool arch-rivals Manchester United in a cup final would surely loosen up the hard memories of that night at Kyiv.
It would also provide him with a chance to show everyone that he still has what it takes to play at a high level and at just 29, still has a lot of time to have a good career ahead.
Hopefully, the player has been preparing well for the fixture over the past week having known that there is a big possibility that he could play.
All eyes will be on Karious if he is given the nod by Eddie Howe and if the player is able to get past the early nervous moments, there is a chance that he could do Liverpool a big favour come the end of the night.
