Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp labelled Roberto Firmino’s goal as the most special moment in his team’s 7-0 win against Manchester United in the Premier League at Anfield on Sunday (5 March).
The Reds ran rampant with Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo grabbing a brace each. Firmino was brought on in the second half and got himself in the scoresheet in the dying embers of the game to seal the 7-0 scoreline.
It was a smart finish from a tough angle that went through a number of bodies before finding its way in. It wasn’t the most beautiful goal Liverpool scored on the day and neither was it important for the result, given we led 6-0 before it.
But for Klopp, it was special because of the developments in recent week. It has been revealed that the 31-year-old Brazil international will leave the club as a free agent this summer instead of extending his contract.
Klopp said after the game (h/t Liverpool Echo):
“Bobby tonight was the most special moment. It was not an easy decision for him. The reception he got was absolutely outstanding. With all the wonderful goals he scored, that’s the goal he pretty much wanted the most.”
He’s spot on. Of course, it was very, very pleasant to see Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez – our recent new signings – score big, beautiful goals against our arch-rivals. It was also brilliant watching Salah dazzle on the big stage again.
But Firmino’s goal celebration and the crowd’s reaction to it spoke volumes. They were serenading one of Liverpool’s modern legends on one of the biggest stages in Premier League football.
No wonder Klopp loves him. He is a manager’s dream. Firmino is versatile, he is talented, and he stays in the headlines for the right reasons. It will be a shame to see him leave but given his age and the new signings we have made, this was perhaps inevitable.
