Liverpool have an active interest in signing Leicester City star James Maddison

According to Football Insider (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool have an active interest in Leicester City star James Maddison ahead of the summer transfer window.

The 26-year-old, whose current contract at the King Power Stadium expires in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt), is yet to sign an extension.

He has been linked with a lot of clubs in the recent past, including Newcastle United. Leicester are desperate to keep hold of him and have handed him in the captain’s armband recently.

The report claims that if the Foxes are unable to convince Maddison to stay, they will ask for a fee in the region of £60-70m.

We all know that Liverpool are in need of a midfield rebuild in the summer. They are already heavily linked with two English midfielders – Mason Mount and Jude Bellingham.

If they sign those two, which looks highly likely at the moment, will they be needing Maddison? One would doubt so. What Jurgen Klopp can do is sign two attack-minded midfielders (like Mount and Bellingham), and get one defensive-minded player to support Fabinho.

So, for the price quoted by Leicester, it doesn’t seem feasible that Liverpool will go for Maddison. But, funny things happen in the transfer market.

Moreover, this is not to say that Maddison is not a good player. He is probably one of the best playmakers in the league. But, in a Liverpool system, getting him and Mount will be like signing players of the same attributes and not knowing how to use them because they cannot play in the forward line.

It will be an interesting summer window for the Reds, especially after seeing their recent rise in form and confidence. If they manage to finish fourth, the rebuild could be accelerated in June and July with the help of the Champions League money.
