Jamie Carragher warns Liverpool fans not to ‘get too carried away’ after Manchester United thrashing

Jamie Carragher does not believe Liverpool are back after thrashing Manchester United

Speaking on Monday Night Football (h/t Liverpool Echo), Jamie Carragher does not believe Liverpool are back on the evidence of them thrashing Manchester United.

The Reds legend did admit that the second-half performance against Erik ten Hag’s men reminded him of some of the best displays Liverpool have had under Jurgen Klopp in the recent past.

After smashing United 7-0, Klopp’s men are now only three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, with a game in hand and a better goal difference.

Here’s what Carragher said about Liverpool and their chances of finishing in the top four (h/t Liverpool Echo

):

“I wouldn’t get too carried away with the defeat for Manchester United, I don’t think they’d lost for 22 games and I wouldn’t say this is Liverpool back.

“There was definitely signs in the second-half, we were watching a Liverpool performance from three or four years ago but even of late, when Liverpool’s results have picked up it’s still not been the Liverpool of old.

“I think that’s difficult to get to because the standard was so high but yeah, it gives everyone confidence that Liverpool can get top four.

“Since the World Cup, I think most Liverpool supporters didn’t think they would get top four but now they’re right in the mix where people might make them favourites but I still think they’ve got a fight on with Newcastle and Tottenham in those positions but right now, if they continue like they did in that second half they’ve got a great opportunity to make it.”

It’s a very balanced opinion from Carragher because we cannot forget that United were slightly the better team in the first half in terms of the chances created.

At the same time though, the second-half blitz cannot be ignored. As much as United threw the white towels in, the clinical nature of Liverpool’s football was exceptional to watch.

After the game, Andrew Robertson summed it up nicely by saying that the fans deserved this after going through a lot this season, but made sure that this is backed up with positive results in the coming games.

If the Reds are to finish fourth, they must back the United drubbing up with a win over Bournemouth on Saturday. If not, it would effectively be meaningless. So many times we have followed up important wins with careless draws and losses this campaign.

There is a second leg of the Real Madrid tie in the Champions League awaiting as well. While the job of overturning a three-goal deficit away from home sounds impossible, the least they can do is make it as uncomfortable for the European champions as possible.

An interesting few months in store for Liverpool before the end of this season. The prospect of finishing fourth in an indifferent season cannot be underestimated.
