Young Liverpool winger Ben Doak included in the Scotland U21 squad for March fixtures

Young Liverpool winger Ben Doak has been included in the Scotland U21 squad for games against Sweden and Wales in March.

The 17-year-old, who made his senior Liverpool debut this season, played his game for the Scotland U21 in September 2022 against Northern Ireland and scored within seven minutes.

Doak arrived at the club from the Celtic youth side last summer for a fee of around £600,000. Apart from the five appearances for the Reds’ senior side, the winger made 21 appearances for various youth sides, scoring 10 goals and assisting seven so far this season (Transfermarkt).

He is a rapid left-footed player who generally likes to operate on the right wing but can do well as an attacking midfielder too.

Even in his brief appearances for Liverpool, we saw the potential the Scotsman has. He would learn a lot from the legend Mohamed Salah and develop himself in the coming months and years.

Representing the national team at the U21 level at the age of 17 shows that he is on the right path of development. He would be aiming to make a breakthrough in the senior side sooner rather than later.

Although it feels early – but given his talent, we won’t be surprised if Doak gets more minutes in the Liverpool first-team next season.

Working under Jurgen Klopp, a manager who never blocks a young player from flourishing, would be a great honour for the teenager. As we have seen with Stefan Bajcetic and Harvey Elliott, the German does not shirk away from giving minutes to top young players. That is how he unearthed the greatness in Trent Alexander-Arnold six years ago.

The good thing about Klopp is that he is great at man-management, hence the young players never feel under undue pressure when put in the limelight.
