“Needs help”- Liverpool legend rips into out-of-sorts Reds’ star following UCL ouster

Jamie Carragher critiques Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold after Real Madrid loss

It is almost common knowledge by now that Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, even though is one of the best in the world in his position, has a lot of work to do with respect to the defensive aspect of his game which requires major brushing.

The player, over both legs in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 was a constant target for Madrid’s attackers and often got the better of the 24-year-old Scouser. However, there are not many players who have managed to keep Vinicius Jr. quiet, but having said that, it was a big ask of Trent to keep one of the best players in the world at bay.

With his defensive problems standing all the more highlighted due to the poor form of the club as a whole, club icon Jamie Carragher made a very brutal, honest and blunt verdict of his fellow Scouser after the 1-0 loss to Carlo Ancelotti’s side in Madrid.

Here is what he said via Liverpool Echo on Alexander-Arnold’s tough time defensively which coincides with the extremely tough results the Reds are getting on the way as well:

“If Liverpool are trying to qualify for the Champions League on a yearly basis, I’m not sure Trent is your man at right-back. If Liverpool get back to being one of the best teams in Europe, he is your man. But, right now, the lad needs help.”

Trent for the Reds

In 59 appearances in the UEFA Champions League, Trent has a goal and twelve assists. While his attacking game is second to none, it is extremely difficult to see the Academy Graduate struggle so much defensively at that level of the game.

Even though as fans, the viewers will not expect the player to play like Prime Paolo Maldini week in and week out, but, as a right-back, one needs to perform better, especially defensively, and even Trent knows that by now.

This season, Alexander-Arnold has faced notable criticism for his subpar displays on the field. He has frequently been found out of position, leading to accusations of poor attitude in his efforts to prevent the opposition from scoring.

In addition, Carragher is of the opinion that Liverpool should acquire a right-back during the upcoming transfer window to provide competition for Trent. This comes after he expressed doubt about whether the player’s defensive skills will improve in the future. With Calvin Ramsay, the Reds probably have that depth in the RB position.

More Liverpool News:

In any case, hopefully, Trent finds out the holes in his game and tries to patch the breaks in the wall. His attacking prowess is too good for the Reds to bench him only because the player has not been as effective in defence. The team should find a way around it, and hopefully, that is soon.
