In an interview with Tuttomercatoweb (h/t Liverpool Echo), the agent of Arthur Melo, Federico Pastorello, has confirmed that his client will leave Liverpool once his loan spell at Anfield ends in the summer.
Arthur was signed from Juventus on the deadline day of the last summer window. With his campaign shredded due to a long-term injury and not getting any game time since getting fit, it was kind of understood that Liverpool won’t be extending his stay at the club.
The Brazil international has made just a solitary appearance for the Reds’ senior side. It was a substitute appearance in a 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Napoli early in the Champions League group stage.
Here’s what Pastorello said about his client’s departure in the summer (h/t Liverpool Echo):
“He was unlucky [Arthur’s stint in England]. He arrived on the last day of the transfer market, he paid off for the season where he played little at Juventus, he was integrating and had a boring injury so he had to operate.
“It was three months of injury, he was on his second bench, I hope he can at least give his contribution. I think he’ll come back from loan and then we’ll see what to do.”
This is not a disrespect to the player, but it was a strange decision by Liverpool to sign Arthur on a desperate-looking loan deal.
Everybody knew that Jurgen Klopp wanted to sign Aurelien Tchouameni last summer, only to see their nemesis Real Madrid get him.
What the Arthur signing told us is that the manager was convinced that there was a shortage of body in the midfield department for the current season. Once the primary target wasn’t available, they became desperate and signed a player who did not look like a Liverpool signing from a mile off.
It will be a sensible decision for all parties that the 26-year-old leaves the club and vacates an overseas slot in the squad for a possible new addition in the summer. We wish him all the best in his future endeavour. His time at Anfield won’t be remembered much, that is for sure!
