Chelsea maintain desire to keep Mason Mount despite his Liverpool links

In what could come as a major blow to Liverpool and their summer transfer plans, Mason Mount and his entourage “held positive talks” with Chelsea owner Todd Boehly over a new contract for the 24-year-old.

The discussions over a new contract came to a standstill until very recently, due to Chelsea’s unwillingness to match Mount’s demands. During the same time, the player’s links with Liverpool oversaw a peak, but the latest developments could cause a huge roadblock for the Reds.

The Athletic via ECHO report that the latest set of conversations between Chelsea’s reps and Mount’s representatives saw Chelsea reiterate their “desire to keep him” at the club. The Cobham Academy graduate has been with the Blues since the age of six.

Despite their unwillingness to let go of Mount, FFP rules could mean that they would have to certainly let go of a number of players, to balance out the books after two transfer windows of heavy spending.

Do Liverpool need Mount as much as Chelsea need him?

Even though the Englishman has not had a good run of games this season, he’s still managed to score three goals and get six assists in 35 appearances across all competitions.

His role in getting Chelsea to two cup finals last season though was immense and there is no doubt about his ceiling.

Liverpool though, are in desperate need of midfielders. The issues have been clearer than ever, and even with Trent Alexander-Arnold in his newfound role of a ‘midfielder who can play right-back’, we need a few quality players alongside him in the middle of the park as the current quality is on a downward slope.

Despite Chelsea’s desire to keep Mount, the lure of playing for Liverpool could be too strong for the midfielder to resist.

Klopp is known for his ability to attract top talent to Anfield, and he could convince Mount to join the Reds this summer. Hopefully, we can see Mount in Red next season, at Anfield.

While Chelsea is keen to retain the midfielder, Liverpool’s interest in him could lead to a potential battle between the two clubs with Arsenal also showing interest but that is another topic. Whatever happens, it promises to be an intriguing summer for both teams.
