FC Barcelona to turn down the chance to sign Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino
According to Spanish publication MARCA (h/t Liverpool Echo), FC Barcelona are out of the race to sign Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino.
It was speculated earlier that Firmino might be close to a move to Camp Nou when his contract expires with Liverpool after the current season ends.
Firmino is expected to leave Anfield after the season ends in search of a new challenge but it would not be in the sunny climate of Spain. It is a bit surprising considering he could have joined them as a free agent and offered much-needed backup for Robert Lewandowski.
It would have been nice for the Reds fans as well to see Firmino play for a top club like Barcelona and succeed there – of course, not at our expense in Europe.
Thereby, the Brazilian’s next club is yet uncertain but certainly, there would be no shortage of suitors for the talented forward. He was the main catalyst in bringing change during the beginning of Liverpool’s domination in the country and Europe under Jurgen Klopp.
His eight years at the club can be seen as really successful seasons and despite a rather disappointing end to his career at Anfield, he should be proud of being a key figure in the team that brought the league back after a long wait.
For Liverpool as well, it would be seen as a big loss and highly important that we have a replacement ready for the Brazilian.
While Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo are all vying for a berth in the starting eleven, neither player has yet completely shown that the position is nailed down.
It is important for us to end the season on a high note and take confidence heading into next season. With a rather uncomfortable win over Nottingham Forest, there needs to be more consistency in the performances going forward.
