Ajax Amsterdam settle on €50m price tag for Liverpool and Manchester United transfer target Jurrien Timber

Ajax Amsterdam are said to have settled on a price tag of €50million for Liverpool and Manchester United transfer target Jurrien Timber.

According to Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg (h/t Liverpool Echo), Ajax want to keep hold of the 21-year-old defender as he is one of their key players – even more so after the recent exits of Perr Schuurs and Lisandro Martinez.

But if a team comes to the negotiation table for a transfer, they will have to part with the aforementioned sum to have a chance at signing the Netherlands international. Liverpool and Manchester United have been linked with the talented defender.

WhoScored.com list Timber as a player who likes to dribble the ball out of the defence, is good at tackling and is a ‘very strong’ passer of the ball. All traits of a brilliant modern-day centre-back.

Timber to LFC?

Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk cannot keep playing forever. They are in their 30s and have lost a bit of their form this season. That doesn’t mean they need urgent replacement.

But we can think about adding Timber for depth right now, and as a first-team option for the near future. Joe Gomez and Matip’s injury issues in the past have also added to Jurgen Klopp’s headaches at times.

This isn’t a bad option to consider at all. The price tag also seems reasonable but hardly any Liverpool fan will want the club to prioritise a centre-back over a central midfielder right now.

We need multiple signings in the middle of the park – and they should be quality players who can slot in the XI without much hassle. Only after we have signed two or more high-quality midfielders should we look at strengthening other positions.
