Sporting CP okay Manuel Ugarte transfer to Liverpool

Primeira Liga giants Sporting CP have given Uruguay international Manuel Ugarte the go-ahead to join Liverpool in the upcoming transfer window.

The midfielder has been linked with a move to the Reds. To that end, the Portuguese outfit’s management have ‘okayed’ the 22-year-old’s possible transfer to the Merseyside outfit next summer. The enforcer is keen on representing the Anfield side.

Speaking to LFC Transfer Room via Twitter, journalist Brahian Kuchman revealed that it is now up to Liverpool to negotiate with the Lisbon-based club for Ugarte and come to an agreement.

“Ugarte has the ‘OK’ from the back room/management staff for a move to @LFC, but now it’s down to #LFC and the negotiations with Sporting. Ugarte would love to play for LFC and that could help negotiations but it won’t depend 100% on him.”

In the summer of 2021, Sporting CP signed the Uruguay international from Famalicao. Immediately, he became a key player for Ruben Amorim’s team in the previous campaign.

This season, the midfielder has once again been pivotal to the Lisbon-based club’s plans. He has made 44 appearances in all competitions for the Primeira Liga giants, assisting one goal.

The 22-year-old has mostly been deployed in the number six position during his time at Sporting CP. However, the Montevideo-born star is also capable of playing a bit further up the pitch in the middle of the park.

Liverpool’s midfield has been underwhelming in the current campaign. The likes of Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have been injury prone.

On the other hand, Fabinho, who has been our enforcer for a number of years now, has dipped considerably. The Brazil international has looked a shadow of his former self this season, which has evidently made our engine room worse.

Defensively, Klopp has been unable to get the best out of the team. Ugarte is a promising defensive midfielder with a lot of potential. We could seemingly do with someone with the Uruguayan’s skill set. But it remains to be seen whether the Reds will be able to get him.
