Not an Easy Choice: Robbie Fowler or Mo Salah?

Fowler and Salah are undoubted LFC legends. Both are precociously gifted attackers with an exceptional eye for goal. Although Fowler is the more natural striker of the two, Salah’s ability to score consistently fires his strike rate far beyond that of the native Liverpudlian.

Let’s break down what these players do well and where any potential weaknesses lie. Firstly, we must point out that Fowler played in far less skilled Liverpool teams than Mo Salah, who has Premier League and Champions League medals in his trophy cabinet. If the roles were reversed, their goal records might be slightly closer.

Fowler is so revered that you can unlock him as a legendary player on FIFA 23. This sort of honor is uniquely reserved for club legends, and as Liverpool’s eight-highest-ever goalscorer, his inclusion in the game is clear. Furthermore, since Liverpool is one of the most well-supported English football clubs anywhere on Earth, they are a popular choice for players looking to play in eSports tournaments and FIFA online.

FIFA eSports tournaments are an enormous business, evident by the substantial gambling markets that run alongside them. Although they aren’t quite as big as some sports betting markets for Premier League games, you only need to look at the market selection on to see how many selections there are to choose from.

Robbie Fowler

As one of the most naturally gifted English strikers of his generation, Fowler had an eye for goal that not many players of his era did at the time or had since. Although he had a wand of a left foot, he could also score goals with his right and head.

Breaking onto the scene as a youngster, he scored the fastest-ever top-flight hat trick, a record that stood for decades until it was topped by another ex-Liverpool striker Sadio Mane while he was playing for Southampton. With over 100 goals for Liverpool, Fowler is on an esteemed list of proven Premier League elite strikers. He could have easily pushed on toward the 200 mark if injuries hadn’t hampered him throughout his career.

Like his teammates Steve McMananaman and Michael Owen, Fowler supported Liverpool’s local rivals, Everton FC, who played at Anfield before Liverpool existed. However, as soon as he burst onto the scene at Anfield, he drew comparisons to some of the greatest players ever working their way through the LFC academy.

Although the injuries had a terrible impact, Fowler still made it into the top 10 goalscorers for LFC shows just how gifted he was. A dream scenario would involve seeing how he would have faired in the Premier League-winning side of 2020 if he was in his prime.

Mo Salah

The Egyptian King is another Kop hero. In 2023, he overtook Robbie Fowler in goals for Liverpool, thus becoming Liverpool’s highest-ever Premier League scorer. But, although he has broken Fowler’s record, there is a lot more to Salah’s game than simply scoring goals – as there was to Robbie’s, to be fair.

Salah’s incredible combination of speed and power strikes fear into European defenses. He has scored some genuinely magical goals when he cuts in from the right wing onto his stronger left foot and fires unstoppable strikes, but his link-up play and some of his solo goals have also been eye-catching.

In terms of solo success, Salah eclipses Robbie. He has a European Cup, a Premier League title, and Premier League Golden Boots to his name. He has also been named PFA Players Player of the Season and has a Puskas Award and multiple fan awards for his solo efforts.

The Verdict

However, as already pointed out, Salah has played in much better teams than Fowler. Ultimately, they were two precociously talented attackers who occupied different areas of the pitch. Robbie was a natural finisher with a deadly eye for goal, he could also play in the pocket behind another striker, and his link-up play was one of the more underrated aspects of his game.

If so many serious injuries hadn’t wiped him out, Fowler could have easily found himself in Liverpool’s top five goalscorers of all time – he would be a few dozen ahead of Mo now. However, considering that he played in some woeful Liverpool teams in comparison, we would say Robbie takes this one in terms of natural ability.

However, if we’re going on power, speed, and trophies in the cabinet, Mo is the obvious choice. It’s such a difficult decision, and it draws a lot of debate between Reds fans worldwide, but the deciding factor is that we don’t think Salah would have scored the same amount of goals Fowler did in much poorer Liverpool teams. If Mo continues to score at such an incredible rate and moves up the all-time LFC chart, then this discussion might be much more different in a few years.
